Doel en inhoud

Deze leergang gaat over de wijze waarop internationaal georiënteerde, gespecialiseerde activiteiten op sociaal, economisch of cultureel gebied een plaats hebben of krijgen in het stedelijk gebied. Het gaat om intensieve plekken van stedelijkheid die vaak in dichte pakking of hoogbouw gestalte krijgen. Dit onderwerp wordt besproken met voorbeelden van opmerkelijke internationale economische, culturele en sociale activiteiten in stedelijke gebieden: de inbedding van de mainports in het stedelijke weefsel (Schiphol en Rotterdam), de hogesnelheidstrein, Den Haag als internationale stad van recht en vrede, nieuwe internationale woonmilieus of internetknopen.

Aan de ene kant zijn dit soort locaties een wereld op zichzelf met internationale vertakkingen. Hoe creëren we deze unieke plaatsen en hoe organiseren we connectiviteit met wereldwijde activiteiten om de benodigde inspiratie op te doen voor de ontwikkeling van nieuwe plaatselijke ruimtelijke patronen? Aan de andere kant is het succes van iedere locatie ook deels afhankelijk van de inbedding in de locale context. Hoe kunnen we vermijden dat dit soort specialistische plekken vervreemd raken binnen de lokale stedelijke omgeving? Het vinden van een goede balans tussen de buitenwereld en de binnenwereld van de stedelijke netwerken is bepalend voor de unieke kwaliteiten van sociale, economische en culturele activiteiten in steden. De vertaling hiervan in ruimtelijke patronen kan leiden tot grote innovatie.

Na een academische introductie op de leergang wordt in 6 praktische bijeenkomsten telkens een Nederlandse casus vergeleken met een buitenlands project.

Purpose and content

This lecture series is about how internationally oriented, highly specialised activities with respect to the social, economic or cultural dimension remain or achieve a place in the urban system. This topic is discussed with examples of remarkable economic, cultural and social activities in urban places: the embedding of the mainports in the urban fabric (Schiphol and Rotterdam), the high speed train network, The Hague as an international city of peace and justice, new international housing locations or Internet nodes.

On the one hand, this type of locations is a world in itself with international interconnections. How can we create these unique places and organise connectivity with global activities in order to access the necessary inspiration for the development of new local spatial patterns? On the other hand, the success of each location partly depends on the embedding in the local context. Finding a good balance between the outside world and the inner world of the urban networks is crucial for the unique qualities of social, economic and cultural activities in cities. The translation of this connection into spatial patterns can lead to great innovation.

After an academic introduction to the lecture series, we will compare in 6 practice-oriented meetings each a Dutch case with a foreign project.
